조각가이자 대형설치프로젝트를 진행하는 Ottmar Horl(오뜨말 훼어)는 독일에서 가장 중요한 현대미술작가 중 하나이다. 2012년 김리아갤러리에서 개최된 작가의 국내 첫 개인전에 이어 2020년 작가의 12개 설치 프로젝트 중 일부를 보여주는 전시가 개최된다. 

그의 많은 작품과 설치물은 하나의 조각을 연결해 발생되는 과정과 그것의 해체에 중점을 된다. “Plastic, An Organisational Principle(플라스틱, 유기적 구조의 원칙)”아래 작가는 대단히 흥미롭고 매력적인 조각 작품을 만들어 내는데, 이 과정에서 사용되는 독특한 기술과 재료를 통해 현대사회의 사회적, 정치적 구조를 투영하고 때로는 위트있게 현실을 지적한다. 

그의 목표는 공공장소의 설치물을 통해 소통의 과정을 창조해 내고 지속적으로 “현대미술이란 무엇인가” 라는 질문을 자신에게, 그리고 관객에게 던지는 것이다. “Art”라는 단어가 자연스럽게 미술관, 갤러리에 독단적으로 가두어져 있는 현실의 장벽을 작가는 작품을 통해 벗어나려 한다. 그의 작품은 모든 사람들이 만질 수 있으며 적당한 돈을 지불하고 가질 수 있다. 이로 인해 관객을 작품의 일부로 개입시키고, 관객이 그의 작품에 대해 이야기하는 모든 시간이 작품의 일부라 말한다. 

이번 전시로 관객들이 예술과 조금 더 가까워 지고, 예술이 사회의 구성요소로 우리가 조금 더 다양하게 소통할 수 있는 매개체가 되길 바란다. 

Ottmar Horl, a sculptor of many large scale installation projects, is one of Germany’s most important contemporary artists. Following the artist’s first solo exhibition in Korea held at Kimreeaa Gallery in 2012, an exhibition showing works from artist’s 12 installation projects will open in 2020. 

His many works focus on the process that occurs by connecting each piece together as an installation and its dismantling after. Under the idea of “Plastic, an organizational principle”, the artist creates very interesting and attractive sculptural works. Through unique techniques and materials used in this process, the social and political structure is projected and sometimes with a very whimsical approach. 

His goal is to create a process of communication through installations in public spaces and continuously ask himself and the audience the question, “What is contemporary art?” The artist liberates the “Art” locked in galleries and museums. Everyone could touch his work and with a reasonable amount of money, could own a piece. This engages the audience as part of the artwork and when they talk about the artwork, the time spent becomes part of the artists’ work. 

We hope that this exhibition will bring the audience closer to art and art, as a part of society, becomes a medium which we can communicate a little more diversely.
