Shunita’s exhibition, <Dive into Deep Water: Inner Pond> will start from Sep. 1 to Oct. 7, 2023, at Kimreeaa Gallery.

Artist, Shunita expresses the story of a ‘Muumyung (No Name)’ who came to Earth in a bread-shaped spaceship. ‘Muumyung’ arrives on Earth in search of food and fulfills his physical hunger. Afterward, ‘Muumyung’ feels mentally hungry, and tries to fill in the constant mental deficiency and emptiness in relationships. ‘Muumyung’, lacking in emotions and expressions, explores the internal world through encounters with the others’ deficiencies which are necessary to relate to each other.

The story of ‘Muumyung’ is initiated from the scene of ‘Ochettuji (one of the Buddhist bowing methods of kneeling, putting both arms on the ground, and then bowing until the head touches the ground), which she saw while traveling in Tibet. The monk with a black forehead, worn clothes, and a presence that appears to be deeply wishing for something. In this experience, Shunita discovers that people long for something invisible, including herself. Shunita starts to express human attitudes toward life through ‘Muumyung’, a being that conveys comfort and empathy. To depict the world of  ‘Muumyung’, Shunita uses elements of imaginary beings, the invisible world, and emotions and expressions that cause pain for many people. ‘Muumyung’ has the aspect of a divine being. Still, rather than the aspect of salvation, it is a being that leads us to the questions about our emotions which will help us to achieve inner enlightenment.

In this exhibition, Shunita shows expressionless ‘Muumyung’ and its inner emotions through colorful paintings, ceramics, and cardboard and sticker installations. ‘Muumyung’ in the gallery will lead audiences into the different depths of inner emotions. As the exhibition title, <Dive into Deep water: Inner Pond> suggests, we hope that it will be a pleasant journey to dive into your deep emotions.
