Kim Jungah: Vagabond - Everything is new
From July 18th to August 19th, Kimreeaa Gallery will be presenting Kim Jungah’s solo exhibition, <Vagabond - Everything is new>.
Kim Jungah’s body of work in <Vagabond> illustrates an individual’s journey of self through a beginner’s mind. Every direction is open to possibilities of encountering nervousness with gratitude, a balance of loneliness and freedom, and a state of confusion and bravery intertwined as one to be transferred on the canvas.
During Kim’s early teenage years, she often came across high-end fashion magazines and catalogs with models that seemed to be captured in a perfectly coordinated manner for eternity, making their extravagant clothes like that of a warrior’s as well. Although the models were striking different poses, their next move was unpredictable to the viewer, raising uncertainty as to what would happen next.
The <Vagabond - Everything is new> exhibition consists of different materials practiced on paper such as sumi ink, watercolor, oriental color paints, tea, handmade ink from natural resources, acrylic paint, and gesso. Although the source of each paint differs, water is what brings them together into one. When working with watercolor, the smearing occurs. Watercolor can present two different outcomes comparing it before and after the watercolor dries. With watercolor comes the control and the ability to surrender, which allows the artist to draw a correlation between this process and a vagabond’s journey.
Since 2020, <Vagabond - Everything is new> has evolved to gravitate more towards surrender than control in order to reach precision. Whether it be success and failure or good and bad luck, Kim hopes to translate the enjoyment she felt from finding balance and harmony through the use of vibrant colors, lines, and shapes portrayed in her work.
